Frequently Asked Questions

What are the entry requirements?

Our beginner, 5 week courses require you to speak, read and write enough English to participate in the class and complete a worksheet each week.

Our qualification courses (Level 1 , 2s and 3s) require a minimum of Level 1 Functional skills, working towards Level 2.

Everyone is required to have an assessment before they can start a qualification course, even if you already hold English qualifications. Please contact workbasedlearning@lutonacl.ac.uk if you are interested in a course and need to arrange an assessment. Please note that assessments usually take place on scheduled dates that are planned in advance.

Are the courses free?

Our beginner, 5 week courses are free if you are a current resident in the UK and can provide proof of address. If not, there is a fee which is yet to be confirmed.

Our qualification courses (Level 1 , 2s and 3s) are free if you are receiving benefits or earning under £25,000 per year. You also need to have a valid form of residency for the duration of the course you would like to complete.

Can you provide help with finding a placement?

Supporting in Schools

What is the difference between the Level 2 Award and the Level 2 certificate?

The certificate requires you to be working or volunteering in a school for a minimum of 9 hours per week. The award does not require this.

Early Years

What are the requirements for the Level 2 Early Years diploma?

You need to be working in an establishment caring for babies and children from 0-5 years. You can be either employed or working on a voluntary basis for a minimum of 9 hours per week.

Level 3 courses

What are the requirements for Level 3 courses?

For all of our Level 3 courses, you must be employed in a relevant role. 

For Level 3 Early Years, you must be employed in an early years setting for minimum of 2 full days a week or equivalent i.e. 12-15 hours a week. 

For Level 3 Supporting in Schools, you must be working within the school in a paid role for a minimum of 2 full days a week or equivalent i.e. 12-15 hours a week with a minimum of 9 hours in the classroom. For example you could be working in a paid role as a midday supervisor but volunteering in classroom support for a minimum of 9 hours.
