Veronica's Story

Why did you want to start a course with Luton Adult Learning?

I hadn’t been in work for a while so I wanted to brush up on my English and maths. I started my first course in 2014.

Which courses did you do?

Functional Skills English, Functional Skills Maths and GCSE English Language. I was very shocked when I got an ‘A’ in my GCSE! Each course in its own way has improved my confidence.

What did this learning lead to?

I became a volunteer for Luton Adult Learning in an ESOL class. Then I became a Learning Support Assistant, working in Functional Skills and ESOL classes. I enjoyed helping the teachers and I liked to help the learners reach their full potential. Being an LSA kept what I had learnt fresh in my mind.

In October 2018, I applied for a job as a receptionist at Luton Adult Learning. I was very pleased to be offered the job.

What are you doing now?

I am now a full-time receptionist at Arndale House. I enjoy this job because I know a lot of the learners who come in. I like welcoming people and interacting with them because I’ve been in their shoes.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, while the college has been closed for face to face learning, was redeployed to The Vale Cemetery and Crematorium in Luton. This was such a rewarding time for me, knowing that I was supporting my colleagues, the wider service and the local community.
